Irene Ha / Baby Reni (1997, NL)

Operating as baby reni, Ha grapples with the unresolved contradictions of the contemporary era while challenging the accepted standards in the modern fashion system, she is not concerned with the impolite rules of how to make a collection. Presenting her clothing in a more interdisciplinary context, she collaborates to find connection in the creative universe she has built. An embarrassing moment can become a luxury item: a glass nose ring resembling a snot bubble. Acetone printed hoodies become wearable memories. A bedsheet that says “sleeps well for once” wishes you a good night’s rest. Her work needs to be accessible by anyone with or without certain knowledge.  baby reni therefore can be seen as a strategic deployment of “cuteness” as an aesthetic category, where power lies in unthreatening appearances.
